Emergency services were called to the Mid Western Highway between Blayney and Bathurst at 4.15am on Sunday with reports a utility had left the road.
Chifley Local Area Command Duty Officer Inspector Gerard Powell said a white Mitsubishi Triton ute was travelling west with five passengers when the crash occurred.
“The driver lost control, left the southern side of the road and collided with an Armco railing, struck a concrete culvert and came to rest on its side,” he said.
Inspector Powell said four men were travelling within the car and another two in the tray of the vehicle. All were between 18 and 21 years old.
Inspector Powell said the 20-year-old driver from Blayney returned a positive roadside breath test reading and was transported to Bathurst Police Station where he returned a mid-range reading.
He was arrested and charged with multiple offences, including dangerous and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm; four counts of causing bodily harm by willful neglect in charge of motor vehicle; mid-range drink driving; unsecured passengers and not displaying P-plates.
He will appear before Bathurst Local Court next month.
A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said one of the men was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition with suspected spinal injures.
She said three men had serious injuries following the crash and two were in a stable condition.
They were transported to Bathurst, Orange and Cowra hospitals.
Blayney man Josh Farr, 21, has been identified as one of the passengers.
A crowd-funding page – at www.gofundme.com/josh-farrs-recovery-fund - has been set up to assist with Mr Farr’s hospital and rehabilitation costs, as well as helping the Farr family to support Josh during this time.
