Ricky Konza, a former competitive skateboarder who lobbied for the Moulder Park facility in 1999, now spends his time sweeping the ramps to clear hazards.
He said the graffiti damage, flagged earlier in the week by councillor Jason Hamling, tended to be caused people outside the area or non-skate park users on their way into town of an evening.
“We were going to put in our own cameras – it’s actually adults who are doing it,” he said.
“We’ve caught adults red-handed.”
Mr Konza said the group of young people who used the skate park supported each other.
“It’s like a men’s shed – I don’t go out, I come to the skate park,” he said.
“This is where kids come to be themselves.”
Linnie Dutton, whose children Drazick and Zoe use the skate park regularly, said it was horrible to turn up and witness damage.
“It’s just horrible graffiti, it’s not art, this is different,” she said.
Mr Konza hopes to start a business to introduce children to the sport and hold competitions for aspiring skaters across the region so they would not have to travel.
“The winner gets to go to Brisbane,” he said.
