It may not sound like your normal rugby session, but this is a new normal for SEED Paediatric Service’s sense rugby sessions, which will run through term four.
The first session was last week, and while there are still kinks to be ironed out, SEED Paediatric Service director Sarah McInnes was pleased with the outcome.
“The kids were elated to kick off training, they were filled with energy,” she said.
The sessions, designed for younger children, are a mix of occupational therapy and rugby.
“The program offers an opportunity for increased sensory input, develop their coordination, manage emotions and enjoy the social benefits of being part of a team,” she said.
“Sensory input such as heavy work, crashing and crawling supports regulation of the nervous system which can promote a calm, focused state opening up opportunities for social engagement.”
