Five new people have been elected to Orange City Council in a clean sweep by voters at last Saturday’s election.
The final makeup of the council for the next three years was confirmed after preferences were allocated on Thursday night.
It resulted in Sam Romano and Mario Previtera [Shooters party], Stephen Nugent [Greens] and independents Tony Mileto and Joanne McRae joining council.
Cr Reg Kidd was announced as mayor on Wednesday night after winning the first popular vote to elect the civic leader.
Councillors Jason Hamling, Jeff Whitton, Russell Turner, Scott Munro, Kevin Duffy and Glenn Taylor all regained their spots on council.
However long-serving councillor Chris Gryllis and one-term councillor Ron Gander were unsuccessful.
The surprise of the night was Mr Previtera who polled only 11 first preference votes but he shared in the 2830 votes the Shooters received above the line.
He said he had only joined the Shooters party this year.
VIDEO: NSW Electoral Commission officials conducting the count:
“I didn’t really think I really had a chance of getting on council,” he said.
“It was more a toe in the water.”
However he said he was keen to see Orange succeed.
“I was born in this town, I lived in this town all my life.
“I’m interested in the town prospering.”
