The opening notes of Billy Joel’s classic song Piano Man are among the best known in pop music.
And now the harmonica used to play those notes will be auctioned off to raise funds for a boy from Orange whose family is seeking to get a Smart Pups puppy to help him deal with severe autism.
Fundraiser Learne Spicer said the harmonica would be on Ebay from Monday and the charity auction would last a week to support young Harrison Bannon.
Mrs Spicer said industry buyers had told her she could expect up to $5000 for the harmonica.
She said retiring Orange mayor John Davis had already started the auction off with a $2500 bid.
Joel gave it to Aussie singer John Swan who has donated it to help the Orange family.
Swan also donated a 1982 gold record that sold for $3100 at the charity night.
Mrs Spicer said they raised $8500 on the night and with funds already raised the $20,000 target was just about reached.
“However they will need to raise a bit more money for the insurance for the puppy,” Mrs Spicer said.
