Hinrichsen, 12, from Orange High School, was part of a 32-strong contingent from Orange and district schools who competed at Eastern Creek.
She completed the three kilometre course in 12 minutes and six seconds.
It qualified her for next month’s nationals in Hobart.
It will be a busy month as she will also compete in the state short course swimming titles at Homebush and in six events at the Western NSW athletics titles in Dubbo.
And she will be celebrating her 13th birthday.
Hinrichsen said swimming was her favourite sport.
“Backstroke is probably my favourite, it’s my best stroke.”
Her family moved to Orange from Canada this year.
Her mum, Alanna, represented Canada at athletics at the highest level, winning a 4X400 metre relay bronze medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games.
