Olivia Hailstone, 38, was found shirtless and unconscious with head injuries outside the caravan in which she was living with her partner at Cowra shortly after 7.30am on Thursday, June 29.

The woman was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to Orange Hospital in a critical condition.

She was transferred to Westmead Hospital, but died on Wednesday. 

Police set up a crime scene and believe Ms Hailstone was probably attacked on a nearby roadway and dragged back to the caravan.

“There is an indication of a drag mark from a roadway to the caravan,” Detective Inspector Bruce Grassick said last Friday.

“Part of the investigation will be explaining how she came to be on the roadway. That's still unclear.”

Investigators are examining a range of scenarios.

They say Ms Hailstone could have been attacked by an unknown party on the roadway, she may have sustained the head injuries in an accident or she might have been assaulted by someone she knew.

Detective Inspector Grassick on Friday confirmed reports that Ms Hailstone had phoned her mother the previous night and was upset about an argument she had with her partner.

“It appears [Ms Hailstone] had consumed alcohol, but we're waiting on toxicology results,” he said.

Ms Hailstone's partner is co-operating with police.

Detectives from Canobolas Local Area Command are continuing to investigate how the woman came to be injured, and renew their appeal for anyone with information to contact Orange Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
