The Blue Heelers hold that shield at the moment thanks to a narrow win last year, and although his Cockatoos have won both their games so far in 2017, NSW Country coach Mat Thomas isn’t counting his chickens.
“Whilst we have played well in patches in our two victories, we know the Queensland Country are the current holders of the shield and we will have to step up another few gears to get the result on the weekend,” he said.
The Cockatoos Colts also take on Queensland Country, before the main game, and after both NSW Country will host its annual awards dinner.

Both teams will announce their best and fairest players, the Cockatoos’ winner will be presented with the Will Tanner Medal.
”To be acknowledge by your teammates as the best player in NSW Country is an enormous accomplishment and I know from talking to all the players that they all hold the medal and the recognition in the highest regard,” Thomas said.
The Cockatoos colts kick off at 4.10pm at Gateshead’s Southern Beaches Rugby Club, before the main game at 5.50pm.
