Michael Gregory Nightingale, 43, of Packham Street, had his guns and ammunition seized and firearms licence suspended after police found a rifle outside the gun safe.
Police had been called to Nightingale’s home for an unrelated matter at 10.30am on March 20.
Although Nightingale was not alleged to have committed an offence in relation to the police visit, they checked the storage of his two registered firearms.
One of the guns, a BRNO .22 calibre bolt action rimfire rifle was found in a gun case in the garage with an ammunition belt placed on the case.
According to police facts Nightingale told police he had gone hunting the previous day but hadn’t placed the weapon back in the gun safe.
While police were there he was unable to unlock the safe, so the NSW Fire and Rescue Service was contacted to open it.
Once open, police seized Nightingale’s other gun, a Browning .234 calibre lever action centrefire rifle as well as ammunition.

Tammy Jeffery, 25, of McLachlan Street did not appear in court on Monday when she was fined $350 for drug possession.
Jeffery was one of four people at a house in Rose Avenue on April 4 when police arrived with a search warrant.
While searching a bedroom, police found a plastic bag, containing cannabis heads, that was among Jeffery’s personal possessions.
According to police facts Jeffery said the drugs were hers but had forgotten they were there.
