Kinross Wolaroi School year 12 student Milton Smith has been diving in the depths of the deep sea off Thailand.
Milton has been steadily working his way to completing the gold level Duke of Edinburgh Award for the past 18 months.
Joining a team of volunteers from Projects Abroad, Milton received his advanced certification in diving going on to complete underwater surveys and beach clean ups.
“We were trying to keep the environment clean, making sure animals can thrive and keeping their habitats intact,” Milton said.
“It’s a great feeling being involved with something bigger. You feel a sense of accomplishment.”
Milton said spending two weeks in Ao Nang in the Krabi province gave him a chance to try a career before pursuing it.
“We were down under the reef removing rubbish, taking out abandoned crab cages which had rusted,” he said.
“If you look after the turtles it helps maintain a healthy eco-system.
“We were swimming around reef sharks but they’re harmless. It’s a thrill to see one knowing there was a risk, but we stayed well away from them.”
Milton said after helping clean up parts of the beach, he urged people to be more responsible with their rubbish.
