But green and golds backrower Brock McGarity says his side isn’t using last year’s heartbreaking 14-10 grand final defeat to the Dragons as motivation ahead of Sunday’s decider rematch at Glen Willow.
“We haven’t mentioned it, really,” McGarity said, Rota Setu scoring the match-winning try after full-time to snatch the 2016 premiership.
“For us it’s going to be business as usual.
“I know they’ve been down a few players but they might be getting them back this week. They’ll be tough and certainly if they get guys like Corin (Smith) and Jack (Afamasaga) back, that’ll spark them.”
In-form and on top of the Group 10 ladder, CYMS is the only undefeated side this season.
Defence has been the cornerstone of that run of four wins from four games to start the season, conceding just 62 points – 30 of which came in last weekend’s thrilling derby win over Hawks.
McGarity says his move to the backrow and a similar positional switch for Robbie Mortimer has helped the club lift its intensity without the ball.
“We’ve got centres coming out of everywhere, but I’m ok to play where Sully wants me to,” McGarity said.
“Sully has said it a few times, and I actually think it’s helped with our shape, particularly in defence. We hold our width pretty well at the moment.
“The only difference is in the lungs after a few tackles in a row,” he laughed.
Tom Satterthwaite and Dom Maley are out for the competition leaders, with Mick Sullivan and Lachlan Munro both named to start.
Having already beaten Bathurst Panthers, Orange Hawks, Cowra Magpies and Bathurst St Pat’s in the opening month of the premiership, McGarity says he’s been impressed by a number of returning CYMS guns.
Luke Petrie, Tim Mortimer and prop Chris Bamford all drawing praise, the latter scoring a barnstorming double in last weekend’s derby.
Kick off in Mudgee is at 2pm.
