They visited the Lone Pine memorial first to recognise the servicemen who fought and died at the iconic battle before moving to the crematorium and the cemetery to mark diggers’ final resting places, which were decorated with Australian flags.
Royal Australian Navy warrant officer Ian Harrison of HMAS Creswell led the ceremonies and said the British and Australian navies were similar, having experienced both.
“If you have a good idea [in the RAN], you’re encouraged to get it up – the Royal Navy is very regimented,” he said.
Sydney Dunn, whose grandfather and father fought in World War I and World War II respectively, represented the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
“[Australians and New Zealanders] got closer and closer in battle and it’s the same today,” he said.
