Millthorpe’s very own dry stone wall, welcoming visitors into the village, is now officially approved and building is commencing this week.
Blayney Shire Council and the Roads and Maritime Services have approved the building of the stone wall with contributions coming from the Millthorpe Village Committee, council and council’s Village Enhancement Project fund.
The design comes from the master of stonewall expertise - John Boag - who is overseeing the project design and building from start to finish. Engineer John Harrison volunteered his time to contribute to the development application and traffic control plan for the RMS. A strong group of local volunteers are on hand to gather the stones and build the wall. Speaking at the location at the northern entrance into Millthorpe, Mr Yeates commented that this is a fitting project for Millthorpe’s 150th anniversary.
“This dry stone was built as a community project coordinated by the Millthorpe Village Committee and the Blayney Shire Council as part for the town’s Sesqui Centenary celebrations in 2017,” Mr Yeates said.
“The construction is supervised by John Boag a local identity and stonemason with assistance from volunteer support from local villagers, farmers and school children.
“The stone wall design forms a shape of a traditional mill from the early years of Millthorpe.
“Millthorpe village and the surrounding area has become known for the beautiful stone walls – all built by John Boag including his very own stone wall. Thankfully we have a great group of people volunteering to help build this wall and we are planning an official occasion to celebrate.”
VILLAGE ENHANCEMENT
The Millthorpe community prides itself on its historic village particularly the buildings and streetscape filled with trees that show their true autumn nature at this time of year.
For many years the Millthorpe Village Committee has been instrumental in beautifying and maintaining the upkeep of the overall village and continues to commit funds towards this area.
Millthorpe Village Committee President, John Mason commented that council is not only committed to improve the village but all the villages across the shire.
“It is great to see the council investing time and funds to all villages to enhance their streetscapes... and the surrounds,” Mr Mason said.
