The team has participated in Relay for Life for 15 years and has signed up 40 team members for the event.
Team member and Relay for Life committee member Sandy Ostini was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and subsequently in 2015 with incurable metastatic disease.
Mrs Ostini said she understood what it was like to experience the cancer journey and the important work of the Cancer Council firsthand.
“I certainly appreciate the benefit of the clinical and emotional support services that Cancer Council provide to all those affected by cancer,” Mrs Ostini said.
“Hopefully in the future, through Cancer Council’s research into new treatments and cures and the development of prevention strategies, no one will ever have to hear the words ‘you have cancer’.”
Due to their fundraising efforts, the Robin Hood Hotel team won the business challenge at last year’s event within their category.
Mrs Ostini said the success of the team and the overall Relay for Life event came down to community participation and effort.
“Relay for Life is indeed a team effort, the volunteer organising committee certainly can’t do it without the support of the teams and local businesses,” Mrs Ostini said.
“Several of our major sponsors and many local businesses have been dedicated to the event for several years and are to be applauded for their commitment and community spirit, it’s the sponsors and supporters who allow the event to continue year on year.”
The Cancer Council is a community-funded, community-focused cancer charity dedicated to the defeat of cancer.
It is not a cancer type-specific organisation. Instead, it works across all cancers that affect all people.
All funds raised through Relay For Life allow Cancer Council to continue to support cancer survivors, their carers and families throughout their cancer journey.
