Estelle Dean, one member of the Piranhas’ stellar group of female triathletes, sits on 57 points heading into the final leg of the series and can’t be caught by Mudgee’s Louise Mowlem, no matter the result.
“It’s a great reward for Estelle’s consistency and hard work,” Piranhas president Michael Lockyer enthused.
“She can’t be caught so she’s guaranteed the win, but her daughter Jessie could move into second and give the Dean family a one-two finish.”
Jessie Dean sits third on 36 points, three behind Mowlem.
Young gun Jack Bilton also stands a chance of claiming the men’s title, he’s sitting equal second with Bathurst’s Mark Windsor, just three points behind Mudgee’s Mat Webster in first.
“The grand prix format this Sunday will suit Bilto as well,” Lockyer said.
“I’d say he’s in with a real shot, it’s already a huge result for him though.”
Orange and Mudgee won’t just battle it out for the individual titles either, the two clubs sit first and second, respectively, on the overall tally as well.
In a percentage based format, Orange (10.90%) leads Mudgee (9.62%) by a whisker.
The Piranhas are gunning for a second straight title after regaining the trophy last summer, Mudgee ended Orange’s five-year dominance in 2014-15.
“It’s close and Mudgee are very motivated, but I think if we get our full team down to Cowra we should just be able to hang on,” Lockyer said.
“We definitely want to win the trophy again and it’s also the first time Cowra has hosted the final leg so it should be a great weekend.
“We’ve got the Triathlon NSW Club Championship next weekend in Orange as well, so this will be a great way to go into that race. We’re all looking forward to that.
