Top billing and the last event was RSA Four Cylinder Sedan Championship with 13 of the state’s best drivers fighting out over three, eight lap heats leading up to the mind-blowing 20 lap title fight out.
The fours were split into two groups of six and seven with Orange driver Joel Swadling drawing first blood in his Corolla from Dwain Platt and Slade Anlezark while Edward Newton, also of Orange, cleaned up the second group in heat one over defending champ Sue Healey and Ray Hawkins.
Heat two saw Kiel Swadling take group one honors in his CRX from Ray Hawkins and Terry McGlashen with Sue Healey victorious in group two over Joel Swadling and Robert Nelson.
The fight for pole position was certainly hotting up in heat three giving John Spicer of Orange victory over Colin Mitchell of Moruya and Joel Swadling but it was Gilgandra’s Dwain Platt beating Ed Newton and Kiel Swadling to the chequreed in the second group.
It was certainly heart-in-mouth racing in the 20-lapper as Edward Newton, Dwain Platt and Sue Healey split from the pack and diced daringly until a mid-race stoppage forced a restart.
Their bumper-bar banging clash continued after the restart but it all came to a sudden halt with six laps to complete when the cars of Justin Partridge and Ray Hawkins came together entering turn one.
Hawkins ploughed into the tyre wall, sending tyres flying everywhere, while Partridge ended his race upside down and covered in hot engine coolant - luckily both drivers escaped injury.
The field was further reduced with the withdrawal of the Swadling brother’s cars before the restart which was again won by Newton from Platt while Healey’s Honda ground to stop with a broken gearbox – her crown defence was over.
Newton continued for a flag-to-flag victory followed closely by Platt, Nelson, Spicer, Anlezark, Mitchell, McGlashen and Chloe Board of Bathurst.
The Williams Liquid Waste Service Series Production class gave Portland’s Mitchell Duggan two heat victories with ACT champ Wes Barnes the winner of the other but it was Blayney’s Matthew Hutchison who went on to win the thrilling ten lap feature followed home by fellow Commodore peddlers Duggan, Peter Simmons and Tim Graham.
The Stones Pest and Weed Control Junior all star class saw some really top class racing with Narrabri’s Dean Platt claiming two heat victories from ACT driver Liam Murphy who took the other but it was again young Ryan Harris of Bega taking out the 10 lap feature from Amber Culverson, Sarah Bradley, Liam Murphy, Ethan Brown, Bek Giffin, Dean and Noah Platt
The Suez Junior new star class for 10 to 13 year olds saw some spirited drives from Jaiden Healey who won two heats, Joshua Forgione of Gilgandra who took the other and Jackson Goldie who won the feature race driving Bek Giffin’s Laser.
Goldie overcame a rollover at the ACT Speedway the previous Sunday and proved his versatility by swapping his damaged Corolla for Giffin’s Laser to post a victory over Forgione, Healey, Harrison Granger, Bailey Brennan and Max Essai.
The Tony Scott Plant Hire RSA Street Stocker class is always a highlight of racing and this time Sydney’s Chris Marino claimed two heat victories over Andrew Blackley with one but unfortunately Blackley was forced out of the third heat after a clash with brother Martin’s Commodore.
The amazing 10 lap feature eventually went to Kevin Blackley from wife Jodie Blackley and Shaun Davoodi.
Rounding out the meeting were demonstrations by eight superbly restored Vintage Speedcars and six booming V8 Super Modifieds featuring a Sprintcar.
Results of the pointscore held over three by six lap heats and a ten lap feature race were as follows:
