Keith Smith welcomed the court on behalf of the Wiradjuri people before mayor John Davis hailed the sitting as a reward for the region’s justice professionals.
“They represent all aspects of law in our city in an exacting fashion and are very active in community activities,” he said.
Parliamentary secretary for Justice David Clarke said the first court of petty sessions was held in 1849 and the site was where Ben Hall stood trial for highway robbery.
“That court was a very modest affair, a bar cut on a slab,” he said.
Barrister Bill Walsh the presence of the court was important to remind legal practitioners working in regional areas the system was real and effective.
“Things in the legal world are slowly but surely changing for NSW – the presence of this court is part of that change,” he said.
