Western Zone hit three major stumbling blocks on the second and third days of its Kookaburra Cup campaign at Griffith in the form of the Southern/ACT, North Coastal and Illawarra units.
After a thumping first-up win over perennial powerhouse Newcastle on Monday’s opening day of the under-14 NSW Country Championship, Western suffered a nail-biting loss to Southern/ACT on Tuesday’s second day.
The royal blue caps followed that with consecutive losses to North Coastal and Illawarra in Wednesday’s Twenty20 facet of the competition.
Orange’s Blake Weymouth and Phoebe Litchfield starred in Western’s first-up win and Hugh Middleton picked up where they left off on Tuesday, taking 2-10 from his eight overs to help skittle Southern/ACT for just 85.
But, after a collapse, Western fell one run short.
In its first T20 Western did a good job to restrict North Coastal to 4-114 – Middleton and Orange City seamer Nick Warburton went wicketless, but bowled well.
However the royal blue caps lost a couple of early wickets and the run rate continually climbed. They eventually fell 28 runs short at 8-86.
Western compiled 4-89 in its second T20, which Illawarra ran down with an over and four wickets in hand.
Warburton was the best of Orange’s quartet, taking 1-11 from his two overs against the Illawarriors.
Western takes on Central Northern on Thursday, the final day of the carnival.
