For anyone who doesn’t know cricket that’s one of those unexpected, bizarre periods Twenty20 produces every now and then and this particular over happened to come from former Orange District Cricket Association player of the year Chris Tremain.
The former Kinross tearaway has enjoyed a strong start to the sixth edition of the Big Bash League (BBL06), but in the 14th over of the Melbourne Stars’ chase against his Melbourne Renegades Tremain produced an 11-ball over, which also took nine minutes to complete, in front of the 70,000-odd fans at the MCG.
Incredibly though, the over only cost the Renegades eight runs and Tremain also took the key wicket of James Faulkner, which sparked a collapse which ultimately inspired the red and blacks to a eight-run victory against their cross-city rivals.
Not a bad result, all things considered.
“That’s what I keep telling people,” Tremain laughed, the 25-year-old able to see the funny side of Sunday night’s all-Melbourne derby at the MCG.
“It’s just one of those things that happen sometimes. I didn’t lose my action or anything, I knew exactly what I was trying to do I just sent a few down a bit too wide.
“I had my plan for the over and stuck to it and while I didn’t really execute, it didn’t end up costing us too much.”
Tremain finished with 1-30 from three overs as the Renegades claimed a seven-run win in Sunday’s rain-affected derby, which was headlined by several other bizarre circumstances.
Outside Tremain’s over, Sunil Narine’s elevation to open the batting for the Renegades and the rewards it reaped along with the penultimate over of the Stars’ chase, which featured three run-outs, were equally as offbeat.
Narine (21) and skipper Aaron Finch (30) kicked the Renegades’ dig off well, before Cameron White (64 not out) and Tom Cooper (36) catapulted the side to 4-171.
At 3-109 the Stars looked to be cruising in their bid to run down their target of 159 – adjusted after a rain-break – before Tremain snared Faulkner’s scalp (25), breaking his 57-run partnership with Luke Wright (44).
The Stars proceeded to lose 5-30 to finish 9-151, including the run-outs of Adam Zampa (7), Ben Hilfenhaus (1) and Scott Boland (1) in the space of six balls.
Brad Hogg was the Renegades’ best with the ball, taking 3-22.
With a 2-1 record, the Renegades now sit third, behind the Perth Scorchers and Brisbane Heat. They take on the Stars again in their next BBL06 fixture, on Saturday.
