Payne, Hale and the Betlands – veterans dominated the winners list, with a smattering of strong performances from some of the Central West District Golf Association’s young guns producing enough to suggest competition will be hot in 2017.
Here’s a list of the winners and scores from the major opens in the region:
BLAYNEY OPEN
WINNER: Robert Payne (Duntryleague).
SCORE: Two-over 104 over the 27-hole event.
RUNNER-UP: Pete Kirwan (Cowra).
HE SAID IT: “It’s not entirely surprising, Payney has won so often for so long.” - Blayney’s Mick Miskell.
WENTWORTH OPEN
WINNER: Robert Payne (Duntryleague).
SCORE: Two-under 138 over 36-hole event.
RUNNER-UP: Brett Lange (Cootamundra) – Payne edged the lefty in a play-off, after the visitor forfeited due to leaving the club immediately after his round.
HE SAID IT: “I didn’t know (Brett Lange) had left so I was gearing myself up for a play-off. I was pretty confident too because I’ve got a good record in play-offs.” – Robert Payne.
COUNTRY CLUB OPEN
WINNER: Robert Payne (Duntryleague).
SCORE: 66, 66, 132 over 36-hole event.
RUNNER-UP: Rob Parfett (Duntryleague).
HE SAID IT: “It was quite windy out there over the weekend. (Payne’s) was a great score.” – tournament director Guy Chapman said post presentation.
DUNTRYLEAGUE OPEN
WINNER: Robert Payne (Duntryleague).
SCORE: 72, 70, 142 over 36-hole event.
RUNNER-UP: James Conran (Duntryleague).
HE SAID IT: “That’s the big difference in my game. I’m hitting it a lot straighter now, which is better.” – Robert Payne.
PARKES OPEN
WINNER: Steve Betland (Forbes).
SCORE: Two-under 69 over 18-hole event.
RUNNER-UP: Mark Hale (Mudgee).
COWRA OPEN
WINNER: Andrew Tharle (Cowra)
SCORE: 110 (plus-two) over the 27-hole event.
RUNNER-UP: Jake Mitchell (Cowra) and Peter Kirwan (Cowra).
DUBBO OPEN
WINNER: Jones Comerford (Dubbo).
SCORE: Two-under 69 over 18-hole event (the 2016 Dubbo Open was cut from 27 holes to 18 due to a weather delay in the morning).
RUNNER-UP: Mark Hale (Mudgee).
LITHGOW OPEN
WINNER: Mark Hale (Mudgee).
SCORE: One-under 71 over 18-hole event.
RUNNER-UP: Andrew Burton, Steve Hall and Ian Nightingale (all Lithgow).
BATHURST OPEN
WINNER: Reece Hodson (Bathurst).
SCORE: 74 and 72, 146 over 36-hole event.
RUNNER-UP: Edmund Brownlow (The Australian), James Walford (Duntryleague) and Martin Hooper (Howlong).
HE SAID IT: “There was definitely a bit of home ground advantage for me. I knew where to hit it and where the spots to avoid were. That definitely helped me towards those last few holes each round.” – Reece Hodson.
FORBES OPEN
WINNER: John Betland (Forbes).
