Todd Murphy played an all but lone hand with the bat to put CYMS firmly in the box seat of their Orange District Cricket Association match-up with Kinross, at KWS Main Oval.

With his side in desperate trouble Murphy produced one of the hardest-hitting innings in recent ODCA memory to not just help his side salvage some respect but put the green and golds in a match-winning position – with some help from his bowlers, of course.
The two-time reigning champions were 5-62 were Murphy came to the crease at seven and he ferociously counter-attacked, blasting 85 from far fewer balls to put the students well on the back foot and help CYMS post a more than defensible 176 from 46 overs.
That 85 equates to a tick under 50 per cent of CYMS’ total.
Ed Wright (29) was the only other green and golds’ batsman who contributed, although number 11 Gus Wilson knocked up a timely 7 not out at the end, combining with Murphy in a 65-run 10th wicket partnership.
CYMS, as they have over the past few seasons, promptly went out and took five Kinross wickets in the 40 remaining overs of the day, to leave the students reeling at 5-87 in reply, still 89 runs behind.
Chris Novak continued his rich vein of form, taking 3-28. Murphy, although he went wicketless, produced with the ball too, taking 0-23 from his eight overs to help tie down an end.
In Saturday’s other game, fourth-placed Cavaliers secured first innings points over second-placed Centrals on the back of a stunning Will Currall performance.
Currall bashed 52 in his side’s innings of 194, aided capably by Josh Doherty (42) and Ev McCall (37) before taking 4-14 from six overs to help the maroons skittle Centrals for 125.
McCall also snared 3-14 in a strong individual, all-round performance.
Despite being understrength, Cavaliers’ performance was the side’s best of the season.
The maroons’ batting woes haven’t been a secret this summer, but the side went a long to rectifying them on Saturday.
All of Cavaliers’ top five passed double figures and Chris Martin (14) was the only one to not pass 30, although the lower order didn’t contribute as easily as it could have.
In reply, Wes Roweth (43), Jack Dodds (34) and George Olsen (21) were the only Centrals batsmen to pass double figures.
The two games resume next Saturday at 1pm.
