It’ll be the third time in the last six years the two Bathurst clubs have met in a decider, and it’s also both sides’ fifth appearance in a colts’ grand final in the last seven years.
The crucial aspect, Bulldogs have actually won one – three actually.
CSU hasn’t. In fact, the Mitchell Men haven’t tasted colts success since 2005.
So why should anyone expect that to change this year, especially considering Bulldogs are undefeated in 2016?
Belief. That’s what CSU coach Rob Danelon says anyway, and it all started in the last regular season round against Bulldogs, when the students came within a penalty goal of trumping the minor premiers.
Since then, they’ve secured three unlikely elimination final victories over Orange City (13-12), Dubbo Kangaroos (20-17) and Mudgee Wombats (23-0) to qualify for the decider from fifth.
“To be able to get away with two close wins in the first two weeks of finals, we gathered momentum into that game [preliminary final] against Mudgee,” Danelon said.
“There was quite confidence … they were very relaxed, they knew what they had to do and they did it.”
Five-eighth Daniel Donato, an Orange native, scored most of CSU’s points in that game from penalties, leading Danelon to label the former St Stanislaus College student “very influential in terms of our kicking game.”

Danelon expects Donato to play a crucial role once again, but is expecting two others to be the main source of inspiration for the students – co-captains Nick Plunkett and Tim Serukai.
The latter played in Bulldogs’ premiership-winning colts side last year.
“They’ve led this team very well around the park and I put a lot of faith in them,” Danelon said.
The other factor that Danelon hopes will help his men is the pressure on Bulldogs to make it a perfect season.
“I am hoping that pressure comes into it ... but the Bulldogs side has a lot of experience, quite a few of them have played for two years. One of them has played for NSW Country, quite a few have played for Central West and played first grade this year,” he said.
“They need to be on their game, they need to be at their best because our boys have built up their belief over that last four weeks and they are improving out of sight.”
Kick-off on Saturday is at 10.30am.
