Congratulations to the ABC and its latest Four Corners program for exposing how a major Australian "co-operative" is now squeezing money back from dairy farmers, in an attempt to retreat from optimistic but unrealistic milk prices.

But shouldn't Australian supermarket chains also take responsibility, with their successful "down, down" price pitch to consumers?

And did anybody bother to check for independent advice from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences, or has this agency also been undermined by efficiency dividends and governments' voracious appetite for spin?

At our supermarkets, milk is cheaper than water. We pay less than we've paid in decades, and our Prime Minister doesn't want to talk about it.

It's to be hoped consumers will send a practical message of support to struggling dairy farmers by buying from ethical suppliers, and by cutting the cut-price brands.

IN my opinion, racism is never far below the surface of everyday Australia. However, when I look back over 50 years, I can see positive changes that have been made.

I quickly acknowledge that most Australians embrace multiculturalism and recognise its importance and value. However, I continue to be seriously concerned when I read of fringe groups in our society, who would have us return to the equivalent of the White Australia Policy, and all the hatred and intolerance that went with it.

I HAVE great difficulty understanding how Senator Leyonhjelm claims being called an “angry white male” violates RDA 18C.

I don't see how “angry white male” is “reasonably likely” (i.e., as determined by the standards of an ordinary reasonable member of the Australian community) and “in all the circumstances” to offend.

Last I checked, Leyonhjelm is “white” and “male.” In many of the photos I've seen of him, his facial expression exhibits all the hallmarks of being “angry.”

In writing this letter, I re-read some of Andrew Bolt's writing. I have no Aboriginal ancestry; I found his words disgusting and reasonably likely to vilify and intimidate others.

Similar sorts of items were published prior to November 1938, in Germany, ensuring that Kristallnacht would have its desired effect.

An excellent - and tragic! - example of vilification and intimidation. I hope the HRC bounces Leyonhjelm's claim for being frivolous.
