My wife and I knew Kathy better than her mum and dad as she was a friend to one of our daughters and we used to pick her up for hockey.
Between Kathy and Gazzas they mentioned some of the top spots of the day.
I do not remember if the two Miss Hartleys were still operating their lolly shop somewhere near where Hansens Western Optical is today.
They had a factory in East Orange up towards where OCTEC is today. They made very good quality sweets and their honeycomb was something to die for.
On the outside of their shop was a YZ brand chewing gum machine. One penny a packet with every fourth penny dropping a bonus packet.
I will step back in time and list the shops in the Kaloutsis block around 1945-50, starting on the Sale Street corner, which was Jane Russell hairdressing, then came McNanus’s, then Fletchers.
Both of these were similar mixed businessses.
Next door Frank Kingston ran a wholesale business – sweets and lollies – and next door Malvern Star had their cycle shop.
Champion female cyclist Wanda Logan ... was used as a drawcard for the business by training on a Malvern Star in the window in her riding gear.
Orange had a champion female cyclist Wanda Logan and she was used as a drawcard for the business by training on a Malvern Star in the window in her riding gear.
The next shop was a garage run by Herb Lapham, which is now the light shop. He was agent for Hudson Terraplane cars.
The bowsers were on the edge of the footpath.
Then came Holmes Equitable grocery store. This building has not changed a great deal.
On the now empty block was a nice brick cottage, then came De La Salle School.
Right along side was Pontey’s Bakery and then four residences took up the remainder of the block.
