Bubb was controversially on the wrong end of a split point decision out of Saturday’s middleweight bout at the Melbourne Pavillion against home-town fighter Alex Ilijoski.
The overwhelming response after the five, three minute rounds was that Bubb, 18, dominated the fight in the 72.5 kilogram division of the Powerplay Promotions fight night in Melbourne.
Wharton said as much.
However, two of the three judges officiating the bout didn’t see it that way – and it infuriated Wharton.
“It was a pro-Melbourne crowd with a Melbourne-based fighter … and even they booed the decision. Charlie dominated,” Wharton, the High Impact KRMAS trainer said.
“After the bout, the other trainers came up to me and acknowledged they’d lost … that was before the decision.
“It’s a mistake, that’s the only explanation. Somewhere along the line, someone’s made a mistake.
“I’d hope the judges are reviewed by the Victorian Combat Sports Board ... I’m sure they will be.”
“I’d invite anyone to have a look at the vision when it’s released. Charlie won that fight. He knows he’s performed well enough to win.”
Bubb won’t be stewing on the loss, though.
His attention is already on his upcoming bout with Jake Lund, the number one ranked super middleweight – or 76.2kg division - in Australia, on August 20.
The WBC Australian Super Middleweight title belt is on the line.
The jump up a weight division will be for two fights, Lund’s being the first before Bubb takes on Eli Madigan – a Sunshine Coast-based kick boxer dubbed Mad Dog Madigan.
“The plan after that is to come back down to 72.5 kilos and wipe out that division,” Wharton said, adding the Ilijoski debacle was hard to swallow but wouldn’t deter either Orange gun.
“It is frustrating. Other than his record, it wont’ affect Charlie though. We’re focused on power now in the lead-up to his next fight in five weeks.
“He’s jumping from 72.5 to 76.2 kilos, up a weight division. Charlie is confident in his performance though.”
Bubb’s fight with Jake Lund is on Saturday, August 20.
