They achieved that better than even they may have expected as they raced out to a 43-0 lead at half time and went on to win 57-0.
“It was really good because we wanted to come out hard and we did that so that was the main thing we were pleased with,” back-rower Shaun McHugh said.
“We were a bit disappointed not to score a few more points in the second half but Narromine’s defence improved and they lifted and played well.”
Like any fixture between the two sides in recent times it was a special one for both clubs as they played for the Glenn Browning Trophy in the ‘Beat the Breakdown’ match which helps raise awareness for mental health.
The Roos won convincingly in all three grades, meaning they retained the trophy and also the first grade side’s hold on fourth place on the ladder.
“It was a great day for the club and a big day for Narromine too, it always is with the Glenn Browning Trophy,” McHugh said.
“We take it pretty seriously and hold it in high regard and we always want to go out there and get the points.”
One of the more pleasing aspects for the Roos, on top of another strong all-round performance in the forwards and backs, was the fact players who have spent plenty of time in second grade this year made the step up without missing a beat.
Brad Pugh, a regular in first grade in years gone by, returned and played what McHugh described as a “blinder” as he finished with a couple of tries while Sam Clemence also impressed.
Captain and NSW Country representative Filsione Pauta also got across the stripe, unsurprisingly, on multiple occasions, as did winger Josh Exner, with one of his tries in particular a stellar effort down the sideline.
Ted Bates superbly directed the side around again while Anthony Golding was another to chime in and capitalise on the outstanding work of a forward pack which was without the injured Benn Wright.
Next up for the Roos is a clash with the Mudgee Wombats, a team who beat the Dubbo side earlier this year, and despite going into the match on the back of three straight wins, McHugh said the Roos need to be better again.
Saturday’s match at Cale Oval was the Roos’ first since June 25 and the back-rower stated his side showed some rust that they won’t be able to afford against the seventh-placed Womabts.
“Mudgee will be a different story and last time we played them we scored early but they came back and beat us,” he said.
