A week ago the Nationals’ Andrew Gee was rated a $1.01 certainty by online betting agency Sportsbet.com to win the July 2 poll, and his odds have only shortened since then.
A check of the odds as the polls opened on Saturday morning revealed Mr Gee was now listed at a ridiculous $1.001 – or 1000-1 on.
That means a punter would have to outlay $10 for the chance to win just one cent as a result of Nationals victory.
We’re guessing not many have jumped at that chance.
Labor’s Jess Jennings remains on the second line of betting at $21, followed by Nick Xenophon Team candidate Rod Bloomfield ($34), Liberal Democrat Glen Davis ($51) and The Greens’ Delanie Sky and Christian Democratic Party’s Bernie Gesling (both $101).
Independent Anthony Craig is the rank outsider at $151.
Sportsbet rates Malcolm Turnbull’s Coalition government a $1.10 chance of being returned (Labor is $7) while a hung parliament is rated a $4 chance.
Polling booths across the electorate are open until 6pm.
