When he got it though, the 17-year-old James Sheahan Catholic High School student sure let the rest of his classmates know about it.
Fisher was a late inclusion in the NSW Country under-17 team set to tour Western Australia in July, receiving word he’ll make his country debut during mid-lesson.
“I was sitting in class and mum messaged me. I was over the moon,” Fisher grinned.
“I hopped up and dropped my phone … I was pretty happy about it.
“I wasn’t originally one of (the players named) but one of the other hookers had to pull out so I got the call up.”
Fisher was in a similar position last season, too.
A member of the NSW Country under-17’s initial 34-man squad, Fisher missed the final cut but later received the call-up the main side.
He couldn’t make it last season though, already booked in to tour New Zealand with the Sheahan rugby side instead.
Now, after Central West’s fifth-place finish at the country championships, Fisher is one of five baby bulls in the country team, with Dubbo Roos' product Patrick Berryman, Mudgee Wombats’ duo George Fletcher and Billy Carberry and Bathurst Bulldogs’ junior Felix Quinn all booked to board the place to Perth.
The Lions’ under-17 captain, Fisher said he’s looking forward to the experience and representing country NSW.
“It’s a big jump up,” Fisher said.
“I expect it to be pretty physically demanding. We versed Canberra two weeks ago and they were some pretty big boys.”
NSW Country claimed a comfortable victory against the ACT Brumbies Academy side in that trial game, a warm-up clash that coincided with a training camp alongside the NSW Country under-18 team.
Fisher added he’s thrilled to be recgonised as one of the best young hookers coming up through the NSW Country ranks.
“And it’s fun to be part of,” he said, looking forward to the tour.
“To see what that standard of rugby is.”
Along with the five players in the side, there’s a distinct Central West influence in the coaching ranks with coach Tim Burgess and manager Stuart Thomas both hailing from Mudgee.
The NSW Country under-17 tour will begin when the team flies out on Thursday, July 7, where they’ll play two games and be guests of the Western Force. Country plays the Wanneroo and Associates rugby clubs on tour.
