Two men with trail bikes looked keen on taking their ride to the top of the museum recently, but had second thoughts after being confronted by councillor Ron Gander.
In place now are two posts restricting such dare devils from climbing the lawn, but not much can be done to restrict others from doing the wrong thing.
Cr Gander said he has every faith the Orange public will do the right thing and respect what has become one of the pride and joys of the city.
“The grass is very resilient, tough and long surviving and it is beautifully constructed,” he said.
“I think we’ll find out in the spring what a wonderful place it is - the museum and the canteen will be open, it will be a wonderful asset.
“I don’t think people will be a problem - it’s like the golf course, every now and then something happens that you can’t predict but you can’t live expecting the worst.
“You live in good faith and I think people will respond well and be proud of it.”
Mayor John Davis agreed that if it does snow and people head up the grassy slopes of the museum, they will do the right thing.
He said on the rare events when it snows, finding patches of clear sloping ground to slide down are one of the best parts of growing up in Orange.
“Short of a drive to the mountain, the popular spots have been Duntryleague, Mount Lindsay or the PLC site - now there’s another one,” he said.
“Given the genuine excitement in the community when the grass-covered museum roof first opened, and the hundreds of children and their parents that enjoyed rolling down the roof, I’m not expecting the first snowfall to be any different.
“As a community we don’t have to worry about using this brilliant museum roof too much - the roof is organic and it will grow back.”
