At 53, Mrs Saunders has never had a dance lesson, but will perform a modern jazz routine at next week’s Stars of Orange Dance for Cancer.
The event will feature 16 Orange personalities, accompanied by dance instructors, performing while fundraising for the Cancer Council.
Also dancing are Cody Perrott, Ben Allen, Felicity Nethery, Floyd Cush, Kim Guyer, Maree Schaefer, Megan Foster, Stephanie MacFie, Scott Mileto, Matt Brady, Rod Bloomfield, Theppo Brown, Ben Fairfax Simon Livingstone and Rose Cain.
Despite her inexperience, Mrs Saunders said she would give her all for a worthy cause.
“Raising money for cancer research is such a worthwhile cause and it generates more interest, publicity and excitement when it is attached to an exciting event such as Stars of Orange,” she said.
“Many years ago, my father was diagnosed with, and survived, bowel cancer.”
Five Orange dance schools have donated their time to take the Orange stars through their ones and twos; Stepping Out Dance Factory, Central West Performing Arts, Dance HQ, Colour City Dance and Orange Theatre Company. A professional dancer from CSU is also helping out.
With a bit of help, Mrs Saunders says her performance will be a good one, despite what her children think.
“I had grand ideas of using words like ‘distinctive, energetic and unique’, but when I asked my four children, one of my sons was quick to suggest ‘needs more wine’,” she said.
“I have chosen to go with the former description.”
The event will be held at Orange Ex-Services Club on Friday, May 13.
While tickets are sold out, Cancer Council NSW are taking details for a waiting list.
