JAMES Conran is about to embark on a pretty big week of golf.

In just his second run at the top grade crown, the 17-year-old gun will line up in his first Duntryleague A-grade club championship final on Sunday against Andy Campbell before heading to Taree to tackle this year’s NSW All Schools stroke play and match play golf championships.

It’s the third time Conran, a Kinross Wolaroi School student, has been selected in the Combined Independent Schools side to contest the all schools championships.

And this year more than any the plus-three marker is confident of making an impact.

“I missed out [on the cut] one year and then made the cut the year before ... I made a lot of mistakes in those years though. But that’s an experience thing,” said Conran, the lone Central West representative in the CIS side.

“I made a few stupid errors that didn’t help me. 

“Since then I wouldn’t say I’ve worked on my game, but I’ve worked on just playing a bit smarter around the course.”

He’s proven that this year at Duntryleague.

The No.1 seed heading into the A-grade titles, Conran has outsmarted Sam Pasquali, Adrian Priest and then Dean Turner in last weekend’s semi-final to book a date with Campbell in the club championship decider.

The pair practised together at Duntryleague on Tuesday - a regular occurrence if you ask Conran.

“I’ve known Andy basically my whole life. I play with him a lot,” Conran said, Campbell accounting for Tim White, No.2 Craig Stojanovic and then Rob Parfett in their semi-final last Sunday.

“There is a little bit [of expectation], I’m one of the lowest handicaps at the club, but I try not to worry about that. 

“I just want to try and keep the ball in play as much as I can.”

The Duntryleague A-grade club championship final will tee off at 8am on Sunday, while Conran will take part in the all schools stroke play championships on Monday and Tuesday before the match play titles on Wednesday and Thursday, against NSW Combined High Schools and NSW Combined Catholic Colleges.

“CIS hasn’t been that successful in the last couple of years. Hopefully that can change this year,” Conran said before the trip to Taree.

“It’d be great to head up there having won on Sunday as well.”
