North West Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteer firefighter and Relay for Life committee member Ash Morrow said the firefighters initially entered for a social event but it had grown to be a larger commitment.
“We’ve got 20 registered so far with an anticipated extra 10,” Mr Morrow said.
“I’m on the Relay for Life committee as well, that pushed me to drive hard for my own team.
“We are [RFS] a community service anyway, so it’s just [natural] for us to be a part of relay.”
Mr Morrow was also spurred on to be involved for more personal reasons.
Although he was diagnosed with a benign tumour when he was younger, family and friends who have had cancer and been affected by cancer were his main influence.
This is his second year of being involved and first year on the committee.
To help raise money for the cause the Canobolas RFS team will host a trivia night at Orange High School performing arts centre on Friday at 6.30pm.
Mr Morrow said the team was hoping to raise most of its goal of $2000 at the trivia night.
