AFTER losing a number of their 2015 Blowes Clothing Cup women’s premiership side and with the 2016 pre-season gaining momentum, the Orange Emus Chicks are calling out for players to bolster their ranks.
The Emus Chicks are desperate to go back-to-back this season and with two new sides in Bathurst Bulldogs and Mudgee Wombats entering the competition that task is made substantially tougher.
“We’ve lost a few from the 2015 premiership side to different things, like pregnancy and university,” Emus Chicks coach Amanda Ferguson explained.
“So I guess you’d call this a bit of a recruitment drive. We’re just looking for some extra players to come along and have a run and play rugby.”
To anyone hesitant about joining the club because of a lack of experience, Ferguson had one simple message.
“You don’t need to have played before,” she enthused.
“Anyone is welcome to come and along and play, but obviously it would also suit people who have backgrounds in touch football, or league tag, or even Oztag.
“We’ve had a lot of girls from those sports come and play and pick it up pretty quickly, like (NSW representative) Nikki D’Aquino and (2015 grand final hero) Liv Patterson.
“But as I said, anyone is welcome.”
One of those players is Tiarne Parkes, who joined the Emus Chicks midway through the 2015 season and promptly helped the side claim the title in a canter.
“I just wanted to play real football, I got a bit frustrated with league tag,” Parkes laughed.
“It looked like fun and all the girls get in there and have a go ... and it’s got a really good fitness side to it.
“If anyone is umming and ahhing, I’d just say get in and have a go. I enjoyed last year so much.”
Ferguson explained the club is going to hold a come and try day for anyone interested closer to the season proper, with details of the day to come.
The Emus Chicks train alongside the club’s men’s ranks at 6.30pm on Tuesday and Thursday nights, at Endeavour Oval, and Ferguson said anyone interested should rock up, or contact her on 0409 368 010.
