FORMER Kinross tearaway Chris Tremain continued his bid to cement a first class spot with Victoria after a strong all-round performance in the Bushrangers’ Sheffield Shield win over Western Australia last weekend.

After belting a quick-fire 29 to push his side up to 322, Tremain snared 4-49 in Western Australia’s first dig, helping to skittle the Warriors for just 186.
He has been fighting it out with the likes of Clint Mackay, Scott Boland, John Hastings and Test quicks Pete Siddle and James Pattinson for a permanent position in Victoria’s fast-bowling cartel and he was substituted out of the game when Pattinson returned from Australian 12th man duties.
The 24-year-old said his performance was a step in the right direction, with Victoria eventually winning by 356 runs.
“It was a step in the right direction in terms of keeping my name up there, and in the mix. Although, when there’s competition among the quicks, I never really think you can cement your spot unless you’re a Pete Siddle or James Pattinson, the Test quicks,” Tremain said.
“I was happy enough with the way I bowled, although I chased that fifth wicket a little bit too hard. In that respect it was a little disappointing to not get the fifth and finish the job, but being able to take four is pretty pleasing.
“I was fully aware I was being subbed out for Patto when he came back, so I knew I had to do everything possible in the first two days to help the boys get up.
“It’s not frustrating to be subbed out like that, it’s just the way it is in Shield cricket and I’m pleased I could do what I did in those two days.”
Making Tremain’s performance with the leather all the more impressive, his four dismissals included Test hopeful Cameron Bancroft, gun wicketkeeper-batsman Sam Whiteman, former Test spinner Ashton Agar, and Andrew Tye.
“Bancroft was interesting actually, the way I got him isn’t normally how I take my wickets,” Tremain explained.
“Until then I’d bowled nine overs and I think seven were maidens, and I threw one up on a full length and he nicked it. On any other day he probably hits it for four, but that’s when you just need to ride your luck while it lasts.”
Tremain and his Bushrangers lead the Sheffield Shield competition and their next clash will be against South Australia on Sunday.
