'We’re not here to create problems': operators say heliport will help tourism take off

Helicruz plans to expand its current seven movements, or take-offs and landings, from the D’Aquino Group-owned site to 90 a week for tourism and joy flights, pilot training flights and charter flights, sparking noise concerns from neighbouring residents.

Despite residents’ assertions any commercial aviation activity should be located at Orange Airport, D’Aquino Group spokesman David Crawley said the East Orange Heliport would provide a different service.

“There’s certain individuals that prefer not to use a public airstrip, and they can pop into town in a cab and there will be overnight accommodation for the pilots - it’s a top-end facility for those people who require that service,” he said.

“It’s commercial, but it does add value to the community in that it facilitates emergency services equipped to help the fire brigade or the SES.”

Mr Crawley said the heliport did not use its full allocation, with four movements in the past four weeks despite having approval for 28, and stressed 90 was at the upper end of the spectrum.

He said noise impacts and zoning requirements had been dealt with in the environmental impact statement under assessment with Orange City Council, and all relevant stakeholders had been notified.

Applicant Nessdee Pty Ltd has acknowledged building multiple unapproved additions at the facility, including a second storey on the office, an awning on the hangar’s eastern side and an extended concreted landing area to enable easier refuelling. 

But Mr Crawley was unable to comment on the circumstances surrounding the unauthorised work, and Highland Heritage Estate vineyard operator Rex D’Aquino could not be reached.

“If there are changes made [by the council], we’ll adhere to any changes - we’re not here to create problems,” Mr Crawley said.

The EIS is on display on the council’s website and submissions close on December 22.
