The couple met in January 1965 when Mr Carruthers, then living in Brisbane, was in Orange on a business trip, and saw the now Mrs Carruthers working in a shop.
He asked her out for lunch, which Mrs Carruthers still thinks was "very brave" of him, and just a few months later they were engaged in June, before marrying at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Orange on November 13, 1965.-
Mr and Mrs Carruthers have lived in Orange for their married life, have two daughters and five grandchildren.
They are celebrating their golden milestone with their children and grandchildren and friends at the Patmos Garden Cafe today.
