So when Nick and Eddie Wright clash in Saturday’s opening round of the 2015-16 Orange District Cricket Association first grade season - the first time the duo has faced off in senior cricket - expect plenty of dirty backyard cricket tricks as both attempt to get the better of the other in the first CYMS-CYMS Moroneys clash of the summer.
But expect none dirtier than this.
Eddie, five years the younger of the Wrights, has a better first grade top score than his brother Nick - and doesn’t the former enjoys reminding his older brother of the fact.
“That’s it,” Eddie smiled, hitting 92 against Waratahs in 2013-14.
Nick’s best is 87.
“I still remind him of that. And I got a first grade premiership before him too.”
Eddie was part of the CYMS side that claimed the 2013-14 first grade one-day title.
A side that didn’t include Nick.
“That’s alright,” Nick interjected, a premiership winner with CYMS in the 2014-15 one-day, two-day and Royal Hotel Cup competitions.
“I’ve got three now.”
Nick, 24, is a key bat among the defending premiers middle-order, while Eddie, just 19, sends down some finger spinners for new side Moroneys and the latter is expecting to be handed the cherry as soon as his older brother walks out to the crease at Country Club Oval.
“Hopefully I’ll bowl to Nick. I’m one of the only spinners in the team, so hopefully when he comes in I’ll be bowling and hopefully get him,” Eddie said.
“I’m sure he’ll be brought on especially when I come out,” Nick added.
“I know where to put the fielders for him as soon as he comes in. He won’t be in for too long.”
Nick said his side’s premiership defence was coming along well during the pre-season, and expected every side in the six-team ODCA first grade competition - including Moroneys - to come at the defending champions hard.
“Everyone is gunning for us,” he said.
“Which means everyone is going to be playing better cricket, which is good for the club and Orange cricket.”
Eddie said Moroneys were confident of doing much more than simply making up the numbers.
“Winning [second grade] last year was pretty huge, and we’re at the stage now where a lot of those second graders are nearly first grade standard but we’ve got such a strong side it’s hard for us to get in there,” Eddie added.
“This year will be good. I’m excited for it.”
The CYMS-CYMS Moroneys clash will begin at 1pm at Country Club Oval.
