It’s the ultimate checkout in darts, constituting a perfect game and is notoriously difficult to achieve, even by the game’s top professionals.
It’s similar to a maximum 147 break in snooker, a 300-point game in bowling, a golden set in tennis, or six sixes in an over in cricket.
One way of getting a nine-dart finish is by hitting three triple 20s (180) in the first throw of three darts, doing the same in the second throw and then hitting triple 20, triple 19 and double 12 to go out in the third throw.
The Pommy professionals can get a bonus of at least $16,000 hitting a nine-dart finish.
Orange has players like Dave Whitmore who have had 12-dart games but will we ever see the perfect finish?
There’s also been a few 15-dart games but nine?
In the last round of the men’s competition the Great Western Tigers scraped home 6-5 against the Hotel Orange Assassins in a match that could have gone either way.
Some excellent darts were thrown and games see-sawed all night, coming down to the double nearly every time.
The Tigers took a 4-2 lead after the singles and then 5-4 after the doubles, winning the first triples for the match and losing the second for the 6-5 result.
The Tigers’ Dave Whitmore had another big night with four 100s, three 140s and a 132 and 125.
The other Tigers to roar were Allan Hurford (2x100), Ken Kostitch (4x100), Barry Wicks (133, 107, 100), Lee Byrnes (140, 100) and Kurt Gander (2x100).
The Assassins’ played brilliantly. Hitting a 180, two 100s, 140 and 123.
The other big scorers were Rob Puckeridge (6x100, 140), Rob Crowe (3x100, 2x140, 134, 110) and Rod Millar (4x100, 140, 137, 121).
The Victoria Spitfires also had a narrow 6-5 win over the Metro Pilots with all the games coming down to the wire.
Max Dennis (140), Mark Wiegold (4x100, 121), Jason Fewings (2x123, 100) and Norm Foley (100) got the big scores.
The Pilots also racked up some big scores led by Jay Jordan who hit a 180, two 140s and 133.
Will Owers (100, 101, 111, 125, 135, 130), Justin Metcraft (2x121, 125), Daniel Wiegold (105), Shaun Lennard (121) and Troy Sale (100) were the other Pilots to have good games.
In division 2 the Metro Old boys were too good for the Carrington Devils, winning 9-2, with the Devils missing the points because they failed to lodge a score sheet.
Rob Herbert hit a 180 for the Old Boys and two 100s for a top division performance.
Phil Sturt (100, 132) and Jeff Grindrod (100) were the other big scorers.
The Victoria Outcasts had a 7-4 win over the Royal War Lords with Peter Hamilton (120), Dan Leathem (100) and Aaron Goerss (111) doing the best.
The Warlords’ top scores were hit by John Lord (100) and Justin Preo (107).
The Royal had an 8-3 win over the Metro Misfires but no players were able to hit a 100 or more, which is unusual for this team
The Misfires’ James Carr (117), Michael Birks (140) and Adam Brakenridge (100) got their big scores.
