In fact following Orange City Council approval of Harris Farm Market’s expansion plans, traffic conditions will only get worse if council doesn’t step up and make some much needed changes.
Harris Farm Market is already a popular store but as anyone who regularly shops there will tell you accessing it is not without its challenges.
The Sale Street entrance to the car park area closest to Harris Farm Market requires pedestrians and drivers to share the same narrow uneven driveway and this can prove hazardous for everyone.
If traffic congestion is to increase there needs to be upgraded line markings on the road to ensure drivers and pedestrians know what they’re supposed to do.
Once pedestrians have entered the car park attempting to use the existing pedestrian crossing is already not without its problems.
Often drivers are simply too impatient to wait for the constant flow of foot traffic to pass and force pedestrians to wait instead.
Orange councillor Neil Jones is correct when he said there needs to be a widening of the pedestrian crossing and the speed hump, among a host of other traffic changes.
Harris Farm Market management has made no secret of its grand plans, now it’s councillors’ turn to make their own plans know, including how they plan to fund them.
With congestion in the area set to increase council need to work with store owners to ensure they have every chance of making their business a success and poor traffic management doesn’t impact them.
Above all council needs to ensure increased traffic flow to the area doesn’t lead to increased driver and pedestrian frustration or result in a serious accident.
