It’s also one of the reasons why he wanted to raise money for sick children, according to his mother Cathy Brand. Shaving his head at the Woodbridge Cup rugby league derby between Cargo Blue Heelers and Canowindra Tigers at the Cargo football ground on Sunday, 11-year-old Sam raised $4600 for Give Me 5 for Kids, which supports the Orange hospital children’s ward.
He blew his target of $500 out of the water and Mrs Brand said she could not be more proud of her son.
“Sam’s always been a kid who puts others first. His thoughts are always on other people,” she said.
“He’s always been a little behind, because he has learning difficulties, but I think that’s why he wanted to help, because he recognises the struggles.”
Money to sponsor Sam was collected at Cargo General Store, his school Canowindra Public School, from businesses in Cargo and Canowindra, spectators at the derby on Sunday and from an auction held after the game.
