As the 71-year-old driver stepped out of his vehicle at around 10.30pm he was approached by a man and woman, both armed with knives, who demanded his wallet and earnings.
According to Canobolas Local Area Command Acting Inspector Mick White, the man allegedly threatened to stab the driver if he didn’t comply.
The cabbie handed over his money and the pair then removed the coin rack containing $20 in change.
Police, accompanied by a sniffer dog, arrived at the scene a short time later and managed to track the pair to a causeway behind Spring Street before the dog lost their scent.
Acting Inspector White said the driver was unharmed and didn’t require medical attention.
“He was very shaken up by what had happened,” Inspector White said.
“Obviously this was a massive shock to the victim and police don’t want to see this sort of thing happen, especially when those involved were armed.”
Police established a crime scene in Jindalee Avenue and a forensic team examined the taxi.
“An investigation into the incident is ongoing but police are calling on anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them immediately,” Inspector White said.
The man is described as being between 170cm and 180cm tall, and he was wearing a balaclava and dark pants and a hoodie at the time of the incident.
The woman is described as being obese and at the time of the incident she was wearing a light-coloured hoodie.
Inspector White said detectives were following several leads in relation to the case.
