ANYONE reading my comments in the Central Western Daily on Friday, May 15 (“Farrell Road residents still not over the hump”) could be excused for thinking I was being critical of the police highway patrol.

This is certainly not the case. I have great respect for the work they do in trying to control the problem of speeding and other bad behaviour on out roads.
Like most others I understand that police resources are restricted and that they cannot cover all roads in the area at all times.
My real point was that having identified these “hot spots” it is really only council which has the capacity to fix the problem of speeding drivers on a permanent basis by way of speed inhibitors or speed bumps.
It is a well-known fact that a police presence is extremely effective while it lasts, but soon after police leave the area the problem reappears.
In relation to Farrell Road, not only are the speeding drivers an annoyance and danger to residents and other road users - including cyclists and walkers- they also present a huge risk to the parents and young children attending the two childcare centres on Farrell Road.
To see vehicles being driven at horrendous speeds in the vicinity is very frightening, and I believe that the potential for a serious accident possibly involving children is very real.
I feel that every possible measure should be taken in order to prevent this from happening. I also feel sure that all Orange City councillors would feel the same.
