One look at the calibre of this year’s field, and you can forgive Robertson a little.
The 25-year-old returned to the Orange Tenpin Bowl in style last weekend, leading the overall pinfall by 72 pins from the world’s best bowler, Jason Belmonte, after Saturday’s initial round before extending his lead to 80 pins to be crowned the 2015 open champion, edging out Belmonte and Robert Townsend on the podium.
But the win wasn’t without its hiccups.
Excelling on day one, Robertson felt the looming presence of the Professional Bowling Association juggernaut as day two wore on, with Belmonte bowling a superb 279 game in the fifth on Sunday as well as a 246 in the eighth - in the same game’s Robertson drew 236 and a 179 respectively.
“I let it get the better of me towards the end,” Robertson said, before a 268 game in the final round capped a remarkable comeback to the sport.
Robertson averaged 210 for the open, Belmonte netting an average of 206.
“I made it very hard for myself,” Robertson continued.
“Obviously, watching the scores - I shouldn’t have been doing that - I saw Belmo coming and again made it very hard for myself. But I was able to somehow sort myself out and get it together for the last few.”
Robertson’s overall pinfall total of 4217 from 20 games was 80 pins better than Belmonte, who scored 4137.
Third placed Townsend came from fourth on the day one leader board to leap frog Robert Alston by 18 pins, with Townsend’s 4112 strong enough to net him the final podium place.
Robertson said knocking off the likes of Belmonte was a moment he’ll remember, and one he’ll use as he takes this winning form inter-state in 2015.
“It’s one of my first tournaments back in a couple of years,” he added.
“I gave myself a good break and I’ve come back feeling good about what I do now. I’ve got a bit of drive and passion.”
