Year 12 students Cody Gardiner, Sean Howell and Seb Worboys are the brains behind the high school’s first stand-alone memorial to Anzac forces, unveiled at an Anzac service at the school yesterday.

Sean said the trio noticed the lack of memorial for Anzac soldiers walking to class one day.

“We saw a past year 12 gift, a memorial for past students who have died, and we thought, we didn’t have anything for the Anzacs. We’ve had a few plaques, but that’s it,” Sean said.

The students then went to work, drawing up eight different designs to show to principal Chad Bliss, before the simple design of a plaque, mounted on a rock, surrounded by rosemary bushes was decided upon.

“We chose it for the simplicity of it. We didn’t want to over-show the memorial, because it’s about the Anzacs and that they died serving their country, not the memorial itself,” Seb said.

All up, it took around a term, including school holidays, for the students to design and then construct the memorial themselves, with help from tradesmen and approval from the RSL.

School captains Lebeka Masila and Sam Rodwell were proud to be able to commemorate the 100th year of the Anzac landing with a new memorial.

“I think it’s important because the Anzacs, they basically created the Aussie spirit, doing the hard-yakka, and fighting for your mates. We should remember the sacrifices they made and its good to be able to pay our respects,” Sam said.

Principal Chad Bliss said he was pleased future students would be able to remember the sacrifices Australia’s servicemen and women made for their country, now and into the future.
