“When it goes the wrong way, it goes a long way in the wrong direction,” Neville laughed.
“It’s the story of my golf at the moment.”
And that story continues tomorrow when Neville lines up against Matt DeGraaf in the semi-finals of the Orange Ex-Services A grade club championship, another final four appearance the 31-year-old says adds to the countless others he’s racked up, despite only recording overall victory in 2010.
Qualifying for the finals in seventh, Neville progressed through to the semi-final after accounting for number two seed Wally Hennessy 10 and 9 last week, while DeGraaf progressed after winning his quarter-final 1up.
Neville said he’s confident the “erratic” play that’s gotten him this far can carry him to another final - even if that means he’s forced to fish a few balls from the trees.
“I’ve enjoyed the match play stuff at the moment,” he said.
“I can get the ball around the course so I make my birdies and pars regularly, but often can have a hole where I get a seven or an eight, and that ruins it in stroke. It’s not so bad in match play because you only lose a hole.
“I’m pretty erratic at the moment, but I’m enjoying it.”
Defending champion Dave Chippendale will play last year’s runner-up Gav Hassan in the other semi-final, and Neville said he’s not surprised to see either at the pointy end of the knock-out championship.
“When you look at the draw we’re probably the four golfers everyone thought would be at this stage,” he added.
“I’m hitting the ball terribly at the moment, but we’ll see how things go on Sunday.”
Wentworth’s club championship race will halt for a week this weekend, but Duntryleague’s round of four will be in full swing.
In a rematch of last year’s decider, Andy Campbell will clash with defending champion Craig Stojanovic in one A grade semi-final, while Rob Payne and Wayne Carpenter will go head-to-head in the other 36-hole sudden death clash.
