The wettest April since the weather station opened at Orange Airport in 1996 saw 94.6mm fall in 1998. As of 3pm yesterday afternoon, close to 89 millimetres had fallen at Orange Airport during April.
Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said with the showers predicted for yesterday and today, he expected the record to be broken.
”Orange should get 15 millimetres [yesterday and today], which will make it the wettest April since 1996,” Mr Dutschke said.
He said the weather system that came in from the north-west and the low pressure system that was forming over the NSW east coast contributed to the large amounts of rain.
Mr Dutschke said following the chilly temperatures and rain yesterday, today would be “not quite as cold and wet”, with a top of 12 degrees predicted and light showers.
“It’s becoming sunnier for Wednesday, and Thursday will be the first day this week it will warm up above average [19.5 degrees],” he said.
”There will be a brief shower on Friday, as well as on Sunday, but only about one millimetre is predicted. The other days will be mostly dry though.”
Mr Dutschke said forecasts for the remainder of autumn and the start of winter showed mostly dry weather with some storms.
“There will be frost developing early next week, however, it will only be light frost, and then it should be mostly dry for the next few months,” he said.
“Even though we’ll have long dry breaks, there will be the potential for storms throughout the next couple of months.”
