Rhodes had six birdies and two bogies around the flat, par 68 course, after shooting 68 at Duntryleague on Tuesday, and as of late Wednesday afternoon he was leading the Senior Order of Merit event by six strokes by local hope, Duntryleague’s Robert Payne.
Payne, who carded a one over 71 on the opening day’s play at Duntryleague, shot a one under 67 to be square through 36 holes.
With the final day of the competition at his home course on Thursday, Payne will be an outside chance of claiming victory.
Liverpool’s Gary Batman was a further four strokes back after round of 75 and 66, to sit three over overall in third place.
Rhodes, who plays off plus one, was also leading the handicap category after yesterday’s stellar round, with an overall net score of 134 from Kogarah’s Stephan Musgrave and Windsor’s Robert Lewis in equal second on 135.
On a positive note for Payne (138), he was atop the Country section - for golfers based at rural courses - of the tournament by 10 strokes at time of print yesterday, from second placed Anthony Kennings (148), of Forster-Tuncurry.
Moss Vale’s Paul Maslen was a further stroke back in third.
Rhodes leads the 55-59 years age group as well, also from Payne in second, while Batman leads the 60-64 years competition.
Roy Vandersluis (146), of The Lakes, tops the leaderboard in the 65-69 years division while Gordon Claney (145), from Melbourne’s prestigious Kingston Heath Golf Club, was winning the 70 plus division, with just a handful of groups left to finish the round.
