Coming off a 10 under 60 off the stick on Saturday, Payne carded a one over 71 to sit three strokes off the pace with leader Warren Gorton, of Hawks Nest, shooting a two under 68 to lead the Senior Order of Merit event.
Carpenter, who shot 72 off the stick, sits another stroke behind in equal third.
The order doesn’t change for the trio in the country category - for golfers based in rural areas.
Kogarah’s Stephen Musgrave leads the handicap section with a 72 off the stick, and net score of 65.
Gorton also leads the 55-59 years section, with Carpenter running second, with Musgrave leading the 60-64 years division.
Forster-Tuncurry’s Anthony Kennings shot 77 off the stick to lead the 65-69 category while Jack Parker, of Wyong, leads the 70 plus years division after carding 74.
