On the day traditionally celebrated as Chinese New Year, Mr Soo decided to take the family’s long-cherished Chinese dragon for a ‘walk’ in Summer Street and decorate his business.
“We have had the lion’s head packed away since my father Billy passed away, and we thought it was time to bring it out again and mark Chinese New Year,” he said.
Mr Soo said he still vividly recalled the year his father, who was operating the Hang Sing Restaurant at Blayney, worked with council for the 1988 bicentennial celebrations to bring the traditional lion’s head and Chinese drums to Australia.
“It’s been great today - we have had a lot of fun decorating our business and we were bobbing up and down Summer Street with the lion’s head - people loved it,” Mr Soo said.
On Sunday afternoon the community is invited to join in the Chinese New Year celebration organised by the Orange CultureHub starting at 5pm at the Kenna Hall.
Everyone is welcome and asked to bring along a plate of food to be shared.
There will be lanterns, food, a dragon, music and plenty of fun on offer.
