Summer Hill Creekcare, the small dedicated group of 15 volunteers who look after the health of the river, have organised a relaxed ramble along the creek to encourage residents in the region to spend some time in nature and get to know each other.
Summer Hill Creekcare president and CSU adjunct lecturer Dr Cilla Kinross said it was important people in the area learnt about their surrounding environment.
“We’ll be talking about water quality and quantity; the importance of actually having environmental flows through Ophir,” Dr Kinross said.
“We don’t have the level of water in the creek like we used to, but if we can make sure there is some flow, it helps conserve the flora and fauna.”
The two-hour gentle walk will begin at 4pm from the Summer Hill Creek fourth crossing, and will end in a wine tasting featuring wines selected by CSU winery’s marketing manager Justin Byrne, nibbles and non-alcoholic drinks at the picnic site.
Camping chairs, hats and sunscreen should be brought along, as well as binoculars.
“Hopefully we’ll be able to see some birds and kangaroos and maybe even the elusive platypus,” Dr Kinross said.
Anyone interested in attending the event should register their interest with Dr Kinross by lunchtime tomorrow, Friday, by calling 6365 8221 or emailing ckinross@csu.edu.au.
